DAY 7: The "Smart" Way to San Diego

Before we headed south to San Diego, Mike and Kelly offered to show us around Cal Poly.  We'd never seen it and have heard great things about it.  They'd also been telling us about the infamous murder case of a Cal Poly student, Kristin Smart.  I had noticed several of her bill boards on our drive going south on I5, but didn't realize she disappeared in 1996.  25 years ago!  They told us about a podcast Your Own Back Yard  that takes a deep dive into the mystery and retraces her last steps on the Cal Poly Campus. Well, being someone who frequently watches true crime stories, my interest was definitly peaked!  As we drove through the ENORMOUS, goreous campus, Kelly would bring points-of-interest in Kristin's case to my attention.  I was hooked. Not being an avid podcast listener, I actually couldn't wait to start the drive south to get into this story!

We drove south about 90 miles to Santa Barbara where we decided to stop for lunch in  Brad's old stomping grounds!  He attended UCSB for his undergaduate degree and was craving Freebirds!  As we pulled off the freeway, we noticed there was an unusul amount of traffic.  There was a huge protest to Recall Newsom, California's Emporer, I mean...Governor.  There doesn't seem to be a whole lotta love for that guy in these here parts!

We finally ended up at Freebirds in Goleta (where a lot of the college kids live).  We ate their famous Chicken Quesadilla  What makes it a little different is that the chicken is more of a BBQ type chicken than Mexican, but they put it in Mexican food.  It's delicious!

Due to Covid restrictions, we had to sit outside. We noticed a guy on a skateboard that had an off-leash German Shepherd tagging along.  He kept going in and out of stores, taking the dog with him, and then he'd skateboard and fall off and he had on a kids army helmet.  Super weird!

Well, apparently my husband is in the CIA or something.  What appeared to be a homeless person walked by, and then a "regular joe" guy in white sweat pants and a black hoodie walked by and turned the corner.  Brad said, "those guys are under cover cops".  I almost fractured my neck whipping around to see who he was talking about, then gave him a "really"?  look.  About 30 seconds letter, a police car pulled up into the parking lot and a uniformed policemen turned the corner.  I conveniently remembered I needed to take a picture of the "Freebird" sign (which happened to be around the corner!).  And, sure enough, the guy on the skateboard was handcuffed and the dog was in the back of an car (yes...it was air conditioned).  So, we also got to see a Jailbird! 😂(sorry...)

"If I leave here tomorrow
Would you still remember me?
For I must be traveling on now
'Cause there's too many places I've got to see"

Like San Diego!  But first we had to get through L.A.  Did you know L.A. has traffic!😒 But...it gave us LOTS of time to listen to the Kristin Smart podcast!  We listened for 4 episodes and will take it back up on our way from San Diego to Scottsdale! The "Smart" way to Scottsdale!
